Everyone who has recently browsed through a home decorating magazine is aware that nature is a very prevalent theme. It is quite common to find everything from twig furniture and straw throw rugs to weathered “faux” paint techniques that celebrate the nature theme.
This year, instead of spending a small fortune on store-bought decor for your home, consider using natural “picks” from your own yard and home to create and design your own decorative arrangements. Following are some ideas to get your own natural juices flowing!
Plentiful pine cones
Use pine cones in several different ways to create decorative accents. Use a glue gun to design a quick and easy pine cone wreath. Leave the pine cones natural in color (apply clear adhesive to add to the shelf life) or spray paint them gold or silver.
Hot glue tiny pine cones in a circular shape and place on your dining table. Insert a large, scented candle and use as a centerpiece.
Place large pine cones in a natural basket next to your front entry. Spray pine cones silver or gold. Tie a gold or silver metallic bow around the basket handle and you have an elegant, shimmering, holiday welcome for all your guests.
Dazzling dried fruits
Experiment with dried fruits of several varieties. Dried cranberries and orange slices add color and texture to your holiday decorating.
Arrange dried fruits on a long string and create festive garlands to use as toppers for window treatments, armoires, hutches, or kitchen cabinets. (Loosely wind mini white lights around garlands for more glitter and glitz!)
Terrific twigs and sticks
Create bases for centerpieces made from twigs and sticks.
Frame your favorite holiday photographs or cards in your own unique twig frames.
Unique acorns
Hot glue acorns onto a plain wreath base (twig wreaths would be a good choice) to create a unique natural wreath.
Scrumptious cinnamon sticks
Use one stick per guest as a place card holder for your holiday table. Simply place the name card into the indentation in the cinnamon stick. Tie a small piece of raffia at each end to prevent the name cards from sliding out. For pennies, you have added a stylish, fragrant accent to your holiday table!
Finally, consider this simple idea for a festive natural holiday centerpiece, created from everyday items around your home:
Select a clear, tall cylinder vase or glass. Fill glass bottom with small, natural stones. Place a pillar candle inside (in center of stones) glass. Finish off with a few bold, colorful flowers, (silk flowers would also work) randomly scattered over the stones.
Consider coordinating with your holiday color scheme by using reds/greens or golds/silvers/whites. The entire centerpiece will cost approximately $10 – $20 or less, depending on whether you have to purchase the glass, candle, or flowers.
Remember, your holidays can easily glitter and glow using simple, natural accessories. The cost: only your time and imagination!
